The Festival

Forget about what you’ve read in mainstream media or heard on the rich man’s radio. The Blues comes from Africa, brought to America on a slave ship and now has found its way home. On Saturday 24 February 2024 we will celebrate the Blues in all its glorious shapes and forms with the inaugural launch of the ‘Jozi Blues’ Festival held at the Edenvale German Club. Come witness the artistry and sheer magnificence of South Africa’s most coveted Blues performers and be part of history in the making as we re-write the book on a musical genre that gave birth to all modern music as we know it.

On the menu will be a plethora of diversity stretching from the cotton fields to the city streets that promises to free the spirit and heal the soul.

For over three decades, Albert Frost, a SAMA award-winning blues and rock guitarist, has mesmerized audiences worldwide with his energetic performances. Often hailed as the "South African Hendrix," Frost effortlessly transitions between rhythm and lead guitar, showcasing his exceptional skills on both acoustic and electric instruments. His profound connection to the blues, nurtured through his long association with the Blues Broers from the age of 17, remains his passion. In 2000, Frost became one of South Africa's first Fender endorsees, a partnership that endures. Celebrating 30 years in the music industry as a performer and recording artist, he has collaborated with numerous acclaimed musicians and graced the stages of renowned international festivals. His most recent album, "Sacred Sounds," nominated for the 2022 SAMA Awards, reflects a return to his rock roots with a bluesy afro-pop twist. Frost's enduring enthusiasm for music, combined with his charismatic connection to the audience, ensures that fans keep coming back for more.

Dan Patlansky
Dan Patlansky, a global blues icon, is releasing his 11th album, ‘Movin’ On’, in 2024. Known for his exceptional blues storytelling, he’s recognized as the #4 Best Guitarist worldwide. His previous album, ‘Shelter of Bones’, was the #2 Best Blues Rock Album of 2022. ‘Movin’ On’ is a raw and honest return to his musical roots.
Steven Daniel
Steven Daniel
Steven Daniel is a respected figure in the South African blues scene, while he is also known for his award-winning work in photojournalism. His discography showcases his deep understanding of the blues genre and his musical versatility. Daniels’ commitment to his craft is evident in his music.

The Mojo Hands is a Bloemfontein-based Blues band that has made a significant impact on the South African music scene. Comprised of a four-piece ensemble, the band’s captivating performances have garnered a substantial following. Their music, deeply rooted in the Blues genre, resonates with audiences.

Levinia
Pretoria-based Levinia is a 5 piece fusion outfit that dares to expand the borders of the genre by incorporating a modern approach to their version of the Blues.      
The Black Cat Bones
The Black Cat Bones
The Black Cat Bones, a multi-genre ensemble of musicians hailing from Gauteng, South Africa, was formed in 2007 by founders Andre Kriel and Kobus de Kock Jr., later joined by Gareth Bunge and Casey Rothman. Their captivating performances and diverse repertoire have garnered them a devoted nationwide following, transcending sub-culture boundaries. Following Kobus de Kock Jr.'s passing, the band transformed into a classic 3-piece act, showcasing their tight live shows and impressive improvisation skills. They often collaborate with talented guest artists and are fronted by Gareth Wilson for selected events. Their 5th studio album 'Book of Miriam,' released in 2022 through JUST Music, underscores their musical versatility and industry savvy, while their relentless touring schedule reflects their unwavering dedication to their craft.
Doc John
Doc John
Born and raised in Durban, Doc John began his musical journey as a teenager, performing with various bands in Durban before moving to Cape Town and becoming a member of the Blues Broers, where he played for over a decade. After leaving the band due to the passing of their drummer, Frank Frost, and a hiatus, Doc formed The Boulevard Blues band, which is now celebrating its 25th anniversary. They even had the opportunity to perform in Holland and Belgium in their early years. Doc has also collaborated with musicians like John Macguinness, Graeme Abbott, and Vince Lewis in a band called The Johns. With a rich festival history, Doc John has graced stages at events like Up the Creek, Splashy Fen, Oppikoppi, Strab, Durban International Blues festival, Table Mountain Blues Summit, and many more across South Africa.

Jaco Mans, the accomplished blues artist hailing from Pretoria, is a soulful virtuoso whose music carries the essence of the Mississippi Delta to the heart of South Africa. With a guitar in hand and a voice that resonates with raw emotion, Jaco's blues journey has taken him from the dusty streets of Pretoria to stages across the nation and beyond. His heartfelt lyrics and soul-stirring melodies capture the essence of the blues, drawing listeners into a world of passion, pain, and redemption. Whether he's belting out classics or crafting his original compositions, Jaco Mans is a true bluesman who continues to leave an indelible mark on the blues scene in South Africa and beyond.
